Royal Weddings: Gustaf Adolf and Sybilla of Sweden


He was the tragic prince, born to be king but who never claimed his throne. She was his beautiful wife, left to raise their children on her own after his untimely death. Gustaf Adolf and Sybilla of Sweden married on October 19th and 20th 1932 in ceremonies that were billed as the weddings of future monarchs but which, instead, became the starting point for a family that produced one of Europe's most successful modern kings. Happy ever after? Gustaf Adolf and Sybilla were married for fifteen years and had five children together. The prince, then second in line to the Swedish throne, was killed in an air accident on January 26th 1947 in Denmark. just nine months after the birth of the couple's only son, Carl Gustaf. Sybilla died in 1972. Carl Gustaf became King of Sweden on September 15th 1973.
