Two hundred years ago today. a powerhouse of a modern royal matriarch made her debut. Louise of Hesse-Kassel, born on September 7th 1817, would go on to forge a regal dynasty that ended up marrying into many of the royal houses of Europe. Louise and her husband. Christian, were known as the Mother in Law and Father in Law of Europe as a result. It all began with their wedding..let's step back in time...

Happy Ever After? Almost ten years into their marriage, Christian was chosen as heir to the throne of Denmark after several more senior lines ran out. Louise is said to have been instrumental in this as her own claim to the Danish throne was perhaps even stronger than her husband's. The couple soon set about marrying their children off to the major royal dynasties of Europe with Louise taking a leading role. They are said to have been mutually supportive of one another and rather fond, too. Perhaps not Romeo and Juliet but a modern royal power couple ahead of their time. Queen Louise of Denmark died on September 29th 1898 and King Christian IX died on January 29th 1906.
