This season's must wear colour is yellow. It's one of those years when you kind of want to get hold of the fashion designers and gurus and say 'really?' very loudly. Let's face it, yellow is not the easiest colour in the world to wear so matching it to a wedding guest outfit is a big ask. It's perhaps why we've not seen that many royals try it out for major regal weddings. But if you're looking for some inspiration, there are some royal yellow yesses out there. Here are five rays of royal sunshine to get you wedding ready.
One of the most famous yellow guest outfits of recent royal weddings is the sunshine shade worn by the Queen when William married Kate. It was reportedly picked to make the Queen visible on a grey day. There's definitely no missing it but it's far from over the top. From the smart coat with pin tuck details at the neckline to the matching dress beneath, this is an example of how to make yellow really work - keep the colour blocky and the same. The hat is also in the same bright primrose yellow and is matched to perfection as well with a slightly deeper golden flower detail just to add texture. A dream of a wedding guest outfit in any shade but the yellow really makes it sing.
Queen Maxima of the Netherlands chose a darker shade of yellow for the wedding of Prince Albert II and Charlene Wittstock just months later and scored another win. This time round we've got egg yolk yellow in a simple ruched dress with cap sleeves and another floral focal point. The huge flower on one shoulder is an eye catching accessory while the tan sandals and straw style hat add yet more summer flair. This is perfect inspiration for a summer wedding. Maybe leave the Richard Gere tribute act at home.
OK, it's not exactly a yellow royal wedding guest outfit but it's an outfit worn by a royal who had just announced her marriage plans so it makes the list. It's also rather fab. Beatrix of the Netherlands chose this very Sixties patterned suit to announce her engagement to Prince Claus back in, well, the Sixties. So far, so obvious. But the shape of the jacket is flattering to just about everyone while the half sleeves and huge collar are stylish without waving the whole look at me for being chic flag in everyone's face. It's also got that must have for an easy wedding day as a guest - a matching dress underneath which lets you be super formal at the service and ready to party at the reception. Take this as your inspiration and you might just win the guest style stakes with ease.
Before you get too worried, no one is suggesting you take all your guest outfit inspiration from this creation worn by Queen Margrethe II of Denmark for the marriage of Princess Martha Louise of Norway and Ari Behn in 2002. While we all love a sash and an heirloom tiara, add those to the outfit and there's a serious risk of upstaging everyone and not in a good way. The white basket weave with yellow underlay is pretty, if unremarkable. What put this on the list is the jacket. Not only is it a great shade of sunshine yellow, the shape is flattering enough to suit everyone while stylish enough to make the smart, chic wedding list. From the flared hem to the big sleeves, this has got a look at me factor that is hard to beat. It would also go with plenty of different shade dresses underneath meaning you can be on trend for the start of the day and mellow it down to classic for the party.
