Royal Engagement Rings: Princess Marie of Denmark

Marie of Denmark was a May bride, saying 'I do' to her handsome prince (Joachim has a certain angularity, don't you think) back in 2008 in a royal marriage story that began, officially, with an engagement ring designed as a French tricolour. That's right, a French tricolour. The Danish Royal Family do like a bit of flag symbolism in their engagement rings but the jury is still out on whether it worked in Marie's case. Well, it's not. That's an attempt at diplomacy. This has never been a well loved ring but it's pretty unforgettable.

The sparkler was shown to the media at an official press call just after the couple announced their engagement on October 3rd 2007. There's a huge diamond at the centre with a slightly smaller ruby and sapphire set on either side to produce that all important French flag look. Marie said at the time that it allowed her to keep a little bit of her home country with her.

The stones are set on a wide gold band which adds a kind of retro look that just about rescues this from being just too over the top to work. But while the nod to Marie's home country is very romantic this flag ring ends up looking like just that - a ring designed to look like a flag. It's certainly unique among royal engagement rings but unlikely to spawn that many copycats meaning Marie is in a class of her own when it comes to regal sparklers.
