Royal Wedding Guests: Maxima in Monaco

Our weekly look at royal wedding guests land in Monaco in the summer of 2011. Yes, you've guessed it, it's Monaco, it's Albert and Charlene, it's the wedding where glamour was the bare minimum requirement for guests. The spotlight this time round is on Queen Maxima. Not only did she look fabulous, her outfit is on trend for wedding guests everywhere this spring and summer.

For a sunshine wedding, Maxima went for golden yellow - bang on for that day out and bang on for Spring/ Summer 2017. This is pretty much a perfect wedding guest outfit. It's stylish, it's glamourous, it all matches (let's face it, at royal weddings that is never guaranteed) but it's not so wow that it comes anywhere near to upstaging the bride (and there are plenty of those to come, don't worry).

Maxima, still Princess of Orange at the time, opted for an egg yolk yellow shift dress with clever light ruching across the top to accentuate the shape and the smallest of cap sleeves to cope with the warm weather. There's a huge flower, this is Maxima, of course there's a huge flower. But it's just the right size to add interest without knocking everything else out of view and her husband has come dressed as Richard Gere from An Officer and a Gentleman so she had to up it somehow.

The straw wide brimmed hat is the perfect contrast and when gloves are a must, a pair of dark brown leather will always work and add another layer of texture to the whole outfit.

The queen of accessories pitched it just right with a gold bag and bracelets and earrings of mixed stones - it looks pretty much like diamonds and citrines at a push.

If we have to nitpick then the ankle strap sandal is doing what an ankle strap sandal always does and shortening the whole effect but it's a minor point. On the overall royal wedding guest scale, this is pretty darn lovely.
It's also a perfect pick for inspiration for wedding guests this spring and summer. A bright yellow shift dress is an easy find and when it's this simple, it's easy to wear as well. Starting with a plain dress and adding a flower is an easy upcycle while a big straw hat is also a good bet for a summer do. Maxima looked just fabulous on the day - no wonder the smile is as sunny as the dress.
